Open Recalls on Auction Cars: Check, Disclose, and Price the Fix
Not all recalls carry the same weight
Most recalls are remedy available campaigns: parts or software exist, the franchised dealer performs the work free, and the only real cost is transport and days out of service. Those recalls should shave a little off your bid for the hassle, not kill the deal, especially on bread and butter retail units where the fix is a single visit.
At the other end sit do not drive and stop sale orders, and recalls with no remedy yet. A car under a stop sale cannot legally be retailed by a franchised dealer until cleared, and a no remedy recall can park a unit on your lot for months. Those belong in a different bid category entirely: deep discount, wholesale exit planned, or a pass.
Where and when to check
Recall status is public information keyed to the VIN, available through the national safety database and manufacturer channels. Fold the check into the same pre sale routine as the history report: run your shortlist in batch, flag stop sale and no remedy units, and mark remedy available ones with the nearest dealer who can perform the work.
Recheck on arrival for cars bought online. Campaigns are announced constantly, and a recall issued between your bid and the delivery changes the retail plan, not the ownership. The check takes a minute and decides whether the car goes to recon, to the franchised dealer first, or to the wholesale row.
Disclosure duties when you retail
Recall disclosure rules vary by state and by whether you are a franchised or independent dealer, but the direction of travel is uniform: known open recalls, especially safety ones, must not be hidden from a retail buyer. Many dealers disclose in writing on the buyers guide paperwork and offer the free remedy path at the franchised store.
Handled openly, a recall can actually build trust. Showing the buyer the campaign notice, the booked appointment, and the completed repair invoice demonstrates a process. Hiding it produces the worst version of the same conversation later, after the buyer gets a manufacturer letter and wonders what else was not mentioned.
Pricing the recall into the bid
Build recall cost the way you build recon cost: remedy available means transport plus days of floorplan interest while the car waits for its appointment. No remedy means an unknown holding period, which should be priced as the risk it is, or avoided. Stop sale on a franchised dealers own brand usually means walk away; they cannot retail the car at all until it clears.
Watch recall density by model in your own notes. Some models accumulate campaigns constantly, and a dealer who stocks them heavily is signing up for a permanent shuttle run to the franchised store. That operational drag is a real cost that never appears in the auction data, only in your month.

Frequently asked questions
Are recalls repaired for free?
Safety recall remedies are performed free by franchised dealers for the brand, regardless of where the car was bought. Your costs are transport, time, and floorplan interest while the car is out of service, not the repair itself.
Can a dealer sell a car with an open recall?
It depends on the recall type, the state, and the dealers franchise status. Stop sale orders prohibit retail sale until remedied, and franchised dealers face federal limits on selling new cars under recall. Disclosure duties apply broadly, so check your state rules and disclose in writing.
Where can I check a VIN for open recalls?
The national highway safety database offers a free VIN lookup, and manufacturers run their own recall portals. Either takes under a minute and belongs in every pre bid and on arrival routine.
Should an open recall always lower my bid?
A remedy available recall should lower it slightly, by the real cost of the fix trip and holding time. A no remedy or stop sale recall should lower it dramatically or remove the car from your list, because the holding period is unknown.
